BSU promotes Steilberg, retains Burnett

Posted Feb 3, 2009

Ball State head football coach Stan Parrish has announced Jay Steilberg has been promoted to assistant athletics director for football operations, and Phil Burnett has been retained as the Cardinals defensive line coach.

"It is critical for the Ball State football program to have a liaison with the athletics and university administration and Jay is the perfect fit for this position," Parrish says. "One of my first goals as head coach was to get this done. He has earned this promotion and will be an outstanding asset for the Ball State football program. Coach Burnett has been a tremendous member of our coaching staff, and I was fortunate to be able to retain his services. He has also been our academic liaison for the football student-athletes and will continue in that very important role."

Steilberg will be in his seventh season with the Cardinals in 2009. He works with the Ball State football program on all administrative issues and coordinates all non-coaching duties. Steilberg came to Ball State after serving as a high school assistant football coach at three high schools in Kentucky from 1994-2002 -- St Xavier, DuPont Manual and Fern Creek. He is a 2003 graduate of Bellarmine.

Burnett will be in his seventh season at Ball State this fall. He came to Ball State in 2003 as the defensive line coach after working as an assistant at California (Pa.) (1997-2002), Defiance (1994-96), Oregon State (1991-93) and Northern Illinois (1988-90). Burnett earned his bachelor’s from Northern Illinois in 1988, where he played center and long snapper, and his master’s from Oregon State in 1992.

Ball State, which still has one assistant coach to name to the staff, also announced Ed Stults and Sidney Powell would not be retained for the 2009 season.
