Dante Love suffered a season-ending injury in Ball State’s 42-20 win at Indiana Sept. 20. He suffered a cervical spine fracture and spinal cord injury during the first half of the contest. He ranked second in the nation in receiving yards per game with a 115.0 average at the time of the injury, and managed 2,778 career receiving yards at Ball State to rank second in BSU annals.
Doc Gamble, who is the current head coach at Fairfield and was Love’s high school coach, is expected to return to Withrow to present the retired jersey. As a senior, Love helped Withrow to a 10-1 overall record, a 6-0 Southwest Public League mark, the league championship and the school’s first-ever state playoff berth.
Love was also honored at the GMAC Bowl in Mobile, Ala., at the GMAC Financial Services Mayor’s Luncheon Monday. He was presented a "Champion of Life" award, which recognizes individuals who have achieved great success in their chosen field through dedication and hard work, while overcoming obstacles that have stood in the path of success.
