Ball State players on National Watch List

Posted Jun 13, 2008

Robert Brewster and Chris Miller, both of whom will be senior student-athletes on Ball State University's football team this fall, have been named to national football award watch lists for their respective positions.

Robert Brewster has been named to the Outland Trophy Watch List, which is an award from the Football Writers Association of America to the best interior lineman in college football. Miller is on the Ray Guy Award Watch List, which is presented to the nation's top collegiate punter by the Greater Augusta Sports Council.

The Outland Trophy goes to a tackle, guard or center, and the winner will be announced Dec. 11. Brewster is the only student-athlete from a Mid-American Conference school to be on the preseason watch list. Miller, who was one of 10 semifinalists for the Ray Guy Award last season, is joined by four additional punters on the preseason list and is the only MAC student-athlete represented.

Brewster earned All-MAC First-Team honors last season after anchoring an offensive line that blocked for a school-record 5,640 yards in total offense. In addition, the offensive line protected quarterback Nate Davis, who set a single-season school record with 3,667 passing yards and 30 touchdowns. Brewster started all 13 games at right tackle and has started 25 straight contests, while playing in all 36 in his three seasons.

Chris Miller earned American Football Coaches Association All-America First-Team honors last season and was selected to the Playboy Magazine Preseason All-America Team for the second straight time in 2008. He ranked third in the nation last season with a 45.4 punting average after ranking second in the country with a 46.3 average as a sophomore. Miller punted 61 times last fall and forced opponents to begin drives inside their own 20-yard line 23 times.

Ball State will open the 2008 season Thurs., Aug. 28, with a home game at Scheumann Stadium vs. Northeastern at 7 p.m. The Cardinals will host Navy Sept. 5, in a nationally televised game on ESPN. Ball State tallied a 7-6 mark in 2007 and played in the International Bowl, the school's first bowl appearance since the 1996 season.
