Ball State’s football team has had its second player recognized on a national award watch list when Nate Davis (Bellaire, Ohio/Bellaire H.S.) was one of 32 players in the country named to the Manning Award Watch List, which goes to college football’s top quarterback.

The Manning Award was created by the Allstate Sugar Bowl in honor of the college football accomplishments of Archie, Peyton and Eli Manning, and will be presented to the recipient following the holiday bowl seasonn. It is the only quarterback award that takes into consideration the candidates’ bowl performances.

Davis, who received honorable mention on the 2006 Sporting News Freshman All-America Team, played in all 12 games and started seven as a true freshman last fall. He tied the Ball State single-season record with 18 touchdown passes. Davis completed 150-of-245 passes for 1,975 yards and a .612 completion percentage mark. His 1,975 yards rank as the fourth best single-season effort in Ball State history.

This year’s watch list includes John David Booty of USC, Colt Brennan of Hawaii, Brian Brohm of Louisville, Chad Henne of Michigan and Dan LeFevour of Central Michigan. Davis and LeFevour are the only Mid-American Conference quarterbacks listed among the 32 on the watch list.

Davis joins Darius Hill (Blue Springs, Mo./Blue Springs H.S.) on a national award watch list for the 2007 season. Hill was named to the John Mackey Award Watch List, which goes to the nation’s most outstanding tight end.

The Cardinals will open the 2007 season Aug. 30, vs. Miami University in a renovated Scheumann Stadium at 7 p.m. in a game aired on the Ball State Radio Network and televised by Comcast Local.
