Ball State Spring Practice: Quarterbacks

Ball State Spring Practice: Quarterbacks

With spring practice moving past the halfway point, here is a look at the players that have been standing out at each position. Today we look at Quarterbacks.

Returning Starter: Keith Wenning, 6-3 220 Sr. – There is no doubt who will be the starting QB when the Cardinals take the field on August 29th against Illinois State. Wenning, who is entering his 4th season at the helm of the Cardinals offense, returns as the incumbent and unquestionable starter. Wenning, who threw for 3,095 yards and 24 touchdowns as a junior, needs just 1980 yards and 18 touchdowns to pass Nate Davis as the all time leader in both categories in Ball State football history.

What to watch for: The story here really is who will be #2? Ball State last solid backup QB Kelly Page to graduation a year ago, which leaves Redshirt Freshman Ozzie Mann (6-1 230) and Sophomore Walk-On Kyle Kamman as the top two options in spring practice. Kamman, who started the regular season finale against Miami as both Wenning and Page sat out – has slightly more in game experience. Mann, is a bigger and more refined QB who had a year to watch and run the scout team in practice.

New Face to watch: Ball State signed one QB in the 2013 Class in Jack Milas, a 6-1 199 efficient thrower from Illinois. Milas boasted some gaudy numbers as a prep, but looks to be a probable redshirt and he learns behind 3 QBS with time already in the system.
